Adults

To be an adult is to be at the point in life where the individual can survive in life without parental assistance; it is not specified by law or biological status, but the level of maturity and state of mind.

  1. I think yours has good qualifiers because they are arguable.
    Law- would be 18.

  2. Very arguable. People may disagree and simply state that 18 is when you're an adult because that's the way society taught us. Also, an adult could survive but may still need "some kind" of assistance from a parent.

  3. I like how this means that one can transition in and out of adulthood depending on whether they are receiving parental assistance. Potential opposing argument: What about individuals that use the assistance of others and not their parents? Are they adults?

  4. I like how this definition is about maturity. Many people, especially 18 year old's, would argue many points of your definition. But i agree with Chau on the opposing argument. Are people who have assistance from other and not their parents adults?

  5. Very good. Some will argue what biological status is. I know it means 18, but you can argue much further into that like puberty and so on.

  6. Many 18 year olds (and older) are not mature or have jobs. Are they adults?

  7. How do you determine who is mature enough? a 14 year old might argue they are mature enough and don't need their parents. So since they say they are mature enough and independent does that mean they are? Do they just get to decide that? If there's no law to follow or abide by who is to say who is and is not an adult?

  8. This is very arguable, but plenty of adults need assistance, due to various reasons.

  9. So maturitry and state of mind is comparable to not living with your parents? I know plenty of people who are immature and live alone. Can you not need parental assistance, and still live with your parents? Would you be considered an adult then?

  10. Define point in life where this would happen? your qualifiers are very debatable, main counter argument, your are consider an adult at the age of 18.

  11. Your definition is good but try to simplify it a bit. "An adult is because ______." It's just a tiny bit difficult to follow.

Some might argue what state of mind you are referring to. How do you determine which "state of mind" someone needs to be in to be an adult? What do we do if someone never reaches that? How would society continue to press forward if people can't make decisions after a certain age? What effects does this definition have?

  12. This is very arguable since being an adult definition is so loose. It is hard to define an adult. Good definition.

  13. This is a very good definition because it talks about maturity as a qualifier for being an adult instead of defining it by age.

  14. This is very arguable and shows that the definition of adult doesn't always have to correspond with the law. There is just a discrepancy with the parental issue because there are plenty of immature 'adults' out there.

  15. This is a solid definition. It tells the reader what an adult is and why. I think it could be worded differently at the begining, but overall it was very good.
