The Group Psychology
Group Psychology is a very interesting phrase. It is a psychology phenomenon. The Group Psychology is noticed by a very famous experiment which designed by Asch 40 years ago. The Group Psychology is a widespread phenomenon or a concept that posits that people are easily influenced by the people around them, yet the time or situation which group psychology manifestly also help determinant how easily people are influenced by others.
The scholarly explanation in the dictionary is “Group psychology is the study of organizations and their behavior. It is a realm of psychology that explores the release of individual control within a group setting. Social, organizational and group psychology are all powerful areas of study that look at the many factors that drive group behavior and the decisions that a group makes. Depending on the group’s influence, individual consent is often completely relinquished for the greater good of the group. It is the role of group psychology to uncover why this release occurs and what effects it has on society.” So it is easy to see that this phenomenon always happen in the group, the few will be influenced by the behavior of the most people, so that their sense and the behavior will submit to the majority.
Group Psychology is a compound word in our life, and it is also common and widespread in our life. It is important to define it because it is so common, deeply affect our life, and affect everyone. Iphone and the commercial advertisement are the example of how group psychology influence people around each other. For example, if the most people have the iphone, the few people that have no iphone will want to buy one. But they have never used it and they do not know the advantage of iphone. The sense and behavior of the few people are influenced by the most people around them. It is easy to see that the few people have no iphone want to buy one just because the most people around me have one. That is the phenomenon of Group Psychology. For another example, some commercial advertisements in our life use the group psychology to achieve their aim. They advertise their products to make their products are known by the most people. And it will soon become a hot topic in the most people. Some people will use it and then more and more people will buy it just because it is wide speared around. This is the utilization and the phenomenon of the group psychology.
However the definition of group psychology needs to be talked into account the time and the situation of we are different with others. And all the people affected by group psychology. For example that you must be asked when you were a primary school student. If you have a choice question in your class, the teacher ask to raise up your hand to show the answer, the most students in your class raise up their hand to choose A, but only you choose B. will you raise up your hand to show your different answer? You will think whether or not you misunderstand the question, or you ignored some details of this question, and you will change your answer to be the same with the most people. Even you do not know A is right or not. You just do not want be different with the majority. That is
the phenomenon of the group psychology. So I think it is common in our life. The group psychology must has happened in your life more or less. So how can people avoid the group psychology.
How do people avoid the group psychology? It is the opposition to my definition. It needs to be talked because the group psychology is so common in our life and some of the group psychology has the bad effect. People should be tough and believe themselves when they have the different answer or have something different with the people around them before they got the true answer. In this way, people can avoid some bad effect of group psychology.
I know a perfect experiment is about the Group Psychology. It is the first experiment to show the Group Psychology. Asch conformity experiments are very famous. It shows us that the most people will be influenced by the people around us. This experiment is devised by the American psychologist Asch 40 years ago. It validates that the people will make a wrong judgment or against their will when they are influenced by the most people around them. The article said that Asch makes the participant in a group to be shown a card, and there are five confederates In each group. But the participant does not know that. There is a line on the card and followed by another card with three lines on it labeled a, b and c. the participant was then asked to say which line matched the line on the first card in length. For the first two trials, the subject would be feel are ease in the experiment. But in the third trial, the confederates will give the wrong answer. In the totally 18 trials the confederates give the wrong answer in the 12 trials. The aim of the experiment is to see whether the participants would change their answers. Solomon Asch thought that the majority of people would not conform to something obviously wrong, but the results showed that 25% of the participants did not conform on any trial. 75% conformed at least once, and 5% conformed every time. It is easy to see from this experiment that the sheep mentality is very common in our life. And most people will have the sheep mentality when they make choice. So we have to emphasis the effect and the consequence of the group psychology.
What the consequence and effect will the Group Psychology make in our life. The facts are both good and bad. Some swindles use the Group Psychology to make people have the wrong choices, there always be some confederates in the swindles, the victim will be influenced by them. Also people will lose the precious opportunity because of the Group Psychology. In one word, people will lose the correct position, make the wrong choice or not assert because of Group psychology. Those are the bad aspects of the group psychology above. But the group psychology phenomenon have the good use as well. If people enter a library, it is very quite there, people will keep quite as well. If people enter a hall the floor is very clear, they will not threw the paper anywhere. That is the good use of the group psychology. People always want to be the same as the others around. I know that in the sixties New York, the underground traffic is notorious, the crime happens every day. The government has to take action. They clean the floor and corridor of the underground traffic. So that, the crime rate has reduced a lot. That is because no one wants to be different with the nattiness environment. The group psychology is very common and important in our life, so we should utilize it as much as possible.
How can we utilize the sheep mentality? Some measures have been taken already. Have you ever pay attention to the signal board in the library? It tells people should be quite in the library, so when people enter the library they do want to keep quite as same as the people around them. Also have you ever pay attention to the brand No Honking in the residential area? When people drive a car there, they also will not sound the horn, that is because they do not want be different with others.
As a summary, the Group Psychology is a very widespread phenomenon that can’t be avoided in our life. And everyone will influenced or being influenced by it. Group psychology has both good and bad effect. If people want to avoid to be effected by the group psychology, they should be tough enough.
